What is pince-nez?
Pince-nez (from French "pince le nez" — "pinch the nose") are corrective spectacles without temples, held on the nose by a spring-loaded bridge. They were extremely popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries — worn by aristocrats, doctors, judges, and intellectuals. Theodore Roosevelt, Anton Chekhov, Joseph Conrad — all had their favorite pince-nez model.
Why did pince-nez disappear from the market?
From the 1930s onwards, classic pince-nez were gradually replaced by glasses with temples. There were two reasons: comfort (pince-nez sometimes slipped off the nose or pressed uncomfortably) and fashion (longer frames with temples became a symbol of modernity).
